Youth Ministry: Don’t Stop Believing

The FISH (High School) Retreat was the last weekend of January…and a realllllyyyy wonderful time. I was hugely overwhelmed and blessed by it. Almost a month later, and I’m still thinking about it. It was great to have such a vibrant group of kids (about 16 girls and 10 guys), and have some really stellar conversations, hear hard questions, and struggle together with our faith a little. We played, spent time together, and of course there’s the Screamer. 😮 As for club, the music was ACTUALLY good…it’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that…the musicians and singers weren’t rock stars at all, but made the music fun and sooo singable. I’ve decided that’s key. The speaker was really good, too, and I realize that it’s been a while since I’ve been able to say I actually enjoyed the speaker. He was very down-to-earth, a little goofy (relate-able) and silly, but told some compelling stories.

I think the big thing for me was coming up here for the 4th year in a row with some of these kids, and since seminary, it’s been the 8th year coming up to LC…it’s become a special place for us, for me. I think something about it helps tie us together a little more deeply…makes us feel things more deeply…makes us feel more awake to reality…

The hardest part…knowing that this is Chris Molnar, Claire and Tess Doddy, and Meghan Lynch’s last chance to be up there with us as high school kids (they’re seniors)…I shed some tears at that realization…It’s beautiful to see how far they have come in their journeys, and realize that we were a little part of it…We’ll always have Lake Champion…
